Options: Employer For The Future

Options is nominated in this year’s Irish News Workplace & Employment Awards and to celebrate, we’re taking a closer look at our three shortlisted categories: Employer for the Future, Career Inspiration and Best Place to Work.

In Part I of our blog series, Finance Associate, David Morrow, explains what makes Options an Employer for the Future…

 First Impressions, Lasting Impressions

Options’ status as an Employer for the Future is visible from the moment you walk into any of our regional offices. The first thing that strikes you is the diversity of our team. It doesn’t matter if you’re still at university, if you’ve already graduated, if you took an alternative career route after school, or if you have been in the industry for 20 years, Options actively invests in all team members and cultivates their skills through a variety of training and employment initiatives. Most notably, new hires (irrespective of age or experience) are given the opportunity to travel the world, work directly with clients, further their learning along a career path of their choosing and benefit from a range of employee incentives that reward technical skill-growth and professional development.

New Digs, New People

The second thing you’ll notice about our Belfast office is that it’s new. Boasting over 8,000 square feet of grade A office space, our new headquarters has been meticulously designed with state of the art training, recreational and conference facilities in mind. Our Belfast office not only serves as the global training centre for Options employees, but also includes a variety of activity areas (breakout, meeting, games and dining) to supplement our product development lab and recently launched Options University training academy (which are both available to staff and visiting technical practitioners).

We moved to the new premises in November 2018, two months after I joined – and our Belfast team is primed for further growth. Options’ employee headcount grew 58% between 2016 and 2018 and in that time the Belfast office increased from 15 to over 100 full-time staff! With a proven commitment to its Belfast operations, Options has not only contributed to the expansion of the city’s vibrant FinTech sector, but also established itself as a truly global firm with continuous growth trajectory.

We’re Making the Extra-curricular Our Curriculum

If you hadn’t already guessed, we take automation very seriously at Options and we’re constantly looking for new ways to minimise manual process so that we can focus on delivering high-quality services and support to our clients and partners. Options University began with a six week intensive introduction to Python. The module gave me a whole new perspective on programming and I’ve already used it to automate some of our month-end finance processes. This kind of innovation would not be possible without the startup culture that is championed at Options. Right now our in-house engineers are deploying Powershell to create one of the best technical support services in the industry and our data analytics team are making strides in the world of end-user security. The future will be about how we utilise the power of fourth-generation technology, and Options is very much at the forefront of that effort.

Big Growth Means Big Data

At Options, we’re big into big data. Options staff have trained themselves to become experts in Splunk, the ultimate machine-data analytics engine. Splunk not only enables us to monitor our ever-evolving client environment in real-time, but is now helping our firm deliver enhanced Security, Intelligence and Analytics to our client base. Increasingly, all firms are relying on big data for key insights into their businesses, and Options is well ahead of the game.

In sum, Options really is the employer for the future: be it the company’s future, Belfast’s future, the future of technology, or the future of our employees, we’ve got it – all bases covered.
